The Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House is one of the top tourist attractions in Charles County. The house, located in Waldorf, Maryland, is the former residence of Dr. Mudd, who is notorious for his alleged involvement with John Wilkes Booth in the 1865 assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. He served four years in prison before being pardoned by President Andrew Johnson in 1869. Despite the persistent efforts of his friends and family to have his name cleared, the conviction has never been overturned.
After Booth shot Lincoln on April 14, 1865, he broke his left leg while escaping Ford’s Theater. The next day, Booth, along with co-conspirator David Herold, stopped at Mudd’s house around 4 a.m. Mudd set, splinted and bandaged the broken left leg of Booth and arranged for him to receive a set of crutches. Booth and Herold stayed at Mudd’s house for a period of 12 to 15 hours. At this point, it is unclear whether Mudd had any knowledge of the president’s assassination.
Regardless, Mud didn’t immediately contact the authorities regarding Booth and Herold’s whereabouts. On April 26, 1865, twelve days after Booth’s death, Mudd was apprehended and charged with conspiracy to murder Abraham Lincoln.
